Ch2. A Tale of Two Sisters

"You know all those big words make my head hurt." The princess demonstrated by putting her hoof to her forehead "I get enough of that at council and senate hearings." she sighed "Sorry.. I just meant that our respective stations can make things awkward between us." Twilight smiled nervously. For a moment Celestia frowned. In almost a thousand years she has not allowed herself to date much and has had no offspring of her own. She had had her one night stands and maybe a few relationships over the years, but her royal position and duties always managed to muckle up a good thing for her before it really got going.

When Twilight came into her life she stopped hating herself so much and doted upon her as a mother would, or a big sister. Twilight had filled a void where upon the actions of another long ago had left her empty and hollow.

The ever diplomatic princess looked around the room for something, anything to distract her dubitable student, when she spotted the pile of books on Twilights bed. "burning the midnight oil again are we." she chuckled and sat down her lamp on the bed stand, next to her family portrait. "You know.. Mr. and Mrs. Sparkle don't visit the palace half as much as they ought to." she tried to change the subject from her family troubles to that of Twilight's "I should really have them over for tea or something.. If I could just find the time." but again she had to come back to the reason why she was so busy and that was because the one that left her empty inside also left her alone to rule almost completely on her own.

"Actually I just had a bad dream.. And then all these books fell on me." "You sound like you are having the same kind of night I am." Celestia smiled and chuckled with her hoof daintily over her muzzle, her levity hideing the truth that she hasn't had a sound nights sleep in nearly 200yrs. "but its over now and your safe and sound." Celestia gave Twilight a tassel of her mane, giving her the proper bed-head look.

"So what was your dream? Sometimes it helps to talk about it." she ached inside remembering that one other pony, who she was to busy to listen to when she tried to tell her something was wrong with her, that she wasn't feeling like herself. It turned out that person was being poisoned by the very flowers she kept in her garden when the royal chef fixed her a salad containing the dangerous, night blooming flowers, but that was only the tip of the iceberg. Her problems ran much deeper then Celestia ever could have realized before it was too late.

"I.. dreamed that…" Twilight began reluctantly "That a dark pony came and killed you and took all of Equestria for her own!" Twilight blurted out in one swift gasp, hoping if she just got it out she could lessen the pain like ripping off a Band-Aid. Celestia tried and all but failed to contain and hide the shock in her eyes. "Well.. Its over now." Celestia lied to cover up her true concern. "There was this blue mare.. She kept begging me to save her.. and I couldn't.. I just couldn't!" "Blue.. Mare?" Celestia tried to swallow her heart after it had jumped up into her throat, she could feel the pain of guilt returning to stab her like so many daggers in the heart
("I have long feared the day when my sins would revisit me.") she thought to herself ("and the pain is more then I can tolerate!")

"And those eyes.. Those big green eyes.. I can still see them." Twilight continued feeling as if she had already failed in a great quest before her hero's journey had even begun "So sad.. So innocent.. And pleading! I can still see them princess.. They are burned into my minds eye as if I had stared to long into the sun!" she gasped "Or moon." Celestia answered in a whisper as she turned her head away in shame. "Oh I'm sorry.. I meant no disrespect." Twilight apologized as the princess looked at her, smiling sheepishly. She could see in her coy smile her own beloved one, whom she hadn't seen in almost a thousand years to the day.

Her face though, that sweet blue face of the Filly she called sister, Twilight seemed to now project it and where time had dulled the memory and the pain, suddenly her little sister's face was so clear that she could swear she could reach out and hug it.

Celestia lost herself and embraced the figure. "Princess?!" Twilight gasped in fear and surprise, she had never seen her mentor so affectionate ("forgive me my dear Twilight.. I know you are not my little sister..") she told herself, but Twilight was warm and real, and the perfect stand in for her little sister at the time ("But just let me live the chance to dream this once.") she said to herself, trying to fight back 1000yrs of sorrow. Twilight reluctantly put her arms around the princess. Her mane smelled of sweet strawberries and cream and she to was warm like the sun she claimed. ("the smell.. Is it because I wish it?") Twilight reasoned ("Or is it just the conditioner she used.. Would she smell as sweet to somepony else.. Somepony who did not love her as much as I did? Is she warm because I need her warmth or is it due to the solar radiations she soaks in each day?") she over thought and then just smiled and buried her head in the princess mane and her tears dried as if by magic.

After a while the two of them broke the hug and looked at each other curiously ("Oh my gawd I cant believe I just did that!") they both thought as they stared into each others reluctant eyes. ("What she must think of me!") they shared a thought again. ("How could I have embraced the princess like.. My mother!?") Twilight screamed inside ("how could I let myself go like that?") Celestia scolded ("I'm not her mother.. Or her sister.. And I never will be. To think otherwise would be an unforgivable atrocity to commit against her true parents. Perhaps it was a mistake to bring her into the palace.. But I've been so lonely.") Celestia continued to argue.

("Well this is awkward.") Twilight told herself ("Just smile damnit.. At least that's something!) she prodded herself. Slowly a petite smile slit across her muzzle and the Princess reciprocated ("There yah go.") Twilight praised and her smile grew from cheek to cheek. The princess smile grew more awkward and tense ("okay your definitely scarring her now!") Twilight said and dropped her guise.

Again the princess looked around and her eye fell on the book, opened as if by fate in her students lap. "So what are you reading tonight?" she asked "huh?" Twilight looked down at the book, opened between her knees. "I uhhh.." she fought for words, not knowing the title "May I?" the princess asked and she just nodded with speechless embarrassment.

The princess picked up the book with her telekinesis as she summoned a chair over to the bed side and sat down, gracefully tucking her garment underneath. "Myths, Legends and Mythology, A Story of Equestria." she read aloud "interesting subject.. Would you mind if I read to you for once." "not at all." Twilight responded with a smile as she used her telekinesis to remove the books on her bed and distribute them to other shelves around the room.

"Very well then." Celestia cleared her throat slightly with her hoof curled in front of her muzzle, before she summoned a pair of dainty little reading glasses and placed them on the tip of her nose. She sat back in the sturdy oak rocking chair and cracked open the book in her hooves as Twilight snuggled back into her covers and gave the princess her full attention. As the princess began to speak, the horrible images assaulting her brain began to diminish until even the eyes of the blue mare did not bring her further stress.

Once upon a time…
In a strange and far off land known as planet Earth, there lived a race of intelligent beings, called humans. The humans evolved and learned at a rapid pace. Great was their scientific achievements and no use had they for such arcane concepts as magic and alchemy. Theirs was a world of reason and calculation. Numbers ran the universe in their eyes and anything that did not add up or could not be proved was either dismissed as folly and superstitious beliefs or feared as acts of evil and perdition.

Many great conflicts were fought between men over the existence of gods and devils and religious beliefs. The greatest atrocities committed by men were done so in the name of their faith. This drove the humans to divide into races and religious groups and their they stayed forever apart from one another, until a great cataclysm destroyed the world of man with the force of a thousand suns!

It was a fate that mankind had brought upon itself. In a quest of greed and hatred to design even more and more powerful weapons, in the name of their gods, they had found a way to split the atom and harness the power of God on Earth. The day the power was unleashed was known as "Judgment Day".

No pony knows who started the war, only that it was so great and terrible that it consumed the planet and signaled the fall of man and the rise of the Mobian races.

The war had drained precious resources and plagues and famines and rioting ensued in the aftermath as the survivors of the great nuclear fire fought over the scraps of the old world. No longer did nation fight nation or ethnic group try to cleanse the earth of those they felt to be unworthy. No, a can of soda, a bottle of water, a tank of gas, a pack of cigarettes, a can of tuna, even over the right to breed, these were the things that men killed each other over after the great holocaust.

They acted as animals killing for a morsel of food, or a drop of water, or devouring even one another when no food could be found and thus by their own continued destructive behavior, further reduced the population in their lust to acquire and or destroy what they could not possess.

It was some time afterwards that the first rulers of the Magical Realm of Equestria; King Chronos, a mighty Pegasus, and his wife, Queen Gia, a beautiful unicorn, saw the terrible condition the earth.. Her earth that she had been charged in stewardship to protect, by the powers that be, was in. The humans had failed in their stewardship and the earth lay dieing from the wars and corruption in the skies. Reluctantly Queen Gia agreed with her husband to combine their powers to design a shield of magic fog and electrostatic particles to protect the boundaries of their land, within which time itself would stand still.

Within the boundaries of Equestria there was no day and there was no night, only an everlasting twilight. Thus was the price of the Pegasus King using his mighty wings to stop time and send his subjects into a deep sleep that was unforeseen. The spell could not be undone. Sadly the King and Queen ruled over a land of endless winter and frozen death. Every living creature was preserved in permanent hibernation. Only those within the palace itself were spared the affects of the time spell. Until one day, It was unto the glory of not just the King and Queen but the entire kingdom of Equestria that the queen gave birth to two twin foals.

Princess Celestia paused for a moment, feeling the pain of past memories, memories she had all but forgotten, once again came rushing fourth as if a mighty dam had broken and sent the torrent of visions into her conscious mind, flooding her heart. It was as if she could not go on until she heard the yawn of the tired young unicorn. "What were the foals names?" her wide eyed curiosity spurred the princess on. "We shall just have to read further and find out.. Now shant we?" Twilight nodded in response as the princess once again buried her emotions deep behind the crumbling wall of her subconscious and continued.

The oldest she named Charlene Celestia Chronos, she had the brightest most pristine coat of white one could ever have seen and she was born with a birth mark upon either side of her flank, that of a brilliant and blazing sun, her hair the lightest of powder pink.

"It's you.. The book is (yaaaawn) talking about." Twilight gasped slightly and smiled in surprise "yes I suppose it is." she admitted "I never knew you had another name to your title." "it rarely used." Celestia blushed slightly "But whose the other one?" Twilight asked curiously "Well if you let me finish I'll tell you." the princess wondered if she should read further or if she should just tell Twilight from her own experience first hoof, or at least as much as she could remember. She decided it best that they both learn the truth gradually and the book was doing a rather fine job of telling her life story as far as she could tell. Of course it must have picked up some embellishments from word of muzzle over the years but it seemed right to her.

The youngest, or rather next to be foaled she named Selena Serena Chronos, she was a dark indigo coated little thing, with a mane of stardust light blue and a crescent moon upon her flanks.

The markings were astounding in their own right but the greatest and most obvious feature the parents noticed is that the twin princess had the father's Pegasus wings and the mothers Unicorn horns and natural talents for magic. The two foals showed at an early age a great power within, that of the ability to manipulate the sun and moon. The older sister brought fourth the first full day that Equestria had ever saw since the great divide, where as before the land lay cold and barren, barely able to survive accept through deep hibernation from the sunlight that got through the shield.

The Youngest brought out the moon and dotted the sky with stars to adorn the night and light the way of travelers. It was also her charge to watch over all who travel at night and protect them from the evil that lurks in the darkness, while her sister protected their subjects who worked and played under her sun.

All was well once more in the magical land of Equestria and time and seasons which had long forsaken the ponies of the land returned once more. Shielded from the horrors of the outside world the three races of Mobian ponies, earth, Pegasus, and unicorn, thrived and prospered under Princess Charelene Celestia's sun.

At first theirs was a simple life, not unlike the horses who served mankind in the days of yore. They slept on the soft grass or in small huts known as stables or mangers with earthen floors and straw much like that of common earth horses, out under the stars. And they worked hand and hoof during the day, making time to play and explore the world around them more and more with each generation.

Soon after the birth of the two princess all the citizens of Equestria awoke from their deep hibernation to find they had also been blessed with a mark upon their flanks according to their personality, name, and or life's passion. The citizens of ponydom dubbed them "cutie marks" and to receive one was ever pony's rite of passage into stallion or mare-hood. For many years all was well in the land of Equestria, but the peace was not to last.

Celestia sighed, she could read no further, for she knew too well the rest of the story and why the peace could not last. The truth of the terrible war and battle with her sister was the one tragic element of her filly hood that she could recall in vivid detail. No doubt the book would try to down play and simplify the great conflict that involved her little ponies and the robotic alien race her sister had called from the heavens to do her bidding. It was the dream that haunted her every other night and left her crying with her face to the moon.

She turned to Twilight with tears that she could no longer hold back, but as she was trying to form the words she saw the little unicorn fast asleep and snoozing peacefully. "Thank the creator." she sighed to herself and got up from her chair. She leaned over and kissed Twilight on the tip of her horn "Good night my dearest student. May my sister allow you to sleep peacefully from here on in, until the dawn awakens you." she prayed before quietly leaving the room. She noticed from across the room as she was exiting the door that the candle was still burning. With a mighty flap of her right wing she sent a gentle summer breeze to blow it out and closed the door behind her.

She crossed the hall to the doorway directly adjacent. Twilight had been put up in Celestia's old room and she had moved into her mothers master bed room upon her death, since she was now ruler of all Equestria, even though she refused the coronation as queen and her mother's crown for personal reasons. She waved her hoof and the locks on the doors became visible where as before one could hardly tell there was a door at all. "Princess.. Luna." she spoke as soft and smooth as silk, the password only she knew, and the locks one by one came unbolted and the door opened unto her.

Inside were several possessions that looked more like they belonged to a college level student like twilight and not her late sister, a crown princess of the realm. Books, and models of ancient flying machines and auto-carriages and action figures and dolls adorned the book shelves which were also fully stocked with books of pony-tales and great epic adventure and romance novels as well as a full encyclopedia set and several non fiction books. There was a wide canopy bed with moon and star motif on the blankets and curtains that kept the sleeper in privacy in her chambers. Several telescopes of different sizes lay at the window of the terrace with the curtains fully drawn so no pony could peak into her private inner sanctum, a shrine to her fallen sister.

The sad monarch came and sat down on the bed she had special made in preparation for her sister's return. She looked over at the desk to the far wall, and the journal set on it's table top. She had already long ago read the diary and saw as if from Luna's own eyes how she felt she was losing her very mind, hearing voices and writing cruel and angry words that she never remembered even thinking.

The room her sister had never slept in still held a significance to the princess. Their war had destroyed the old palace and when she failed to save her sister she had salvaged everything that she could from her sisters old room letting most of her own childhood memories go up in flames. The Palace guards insisted that she not concern herself with the possessions of the usurper. It was the first time she had lost her temper and ordered him to go and save every last item possible from her little sister's room or he would soon join her in banishment to the moon. It was an obviously empty threat since she had not the power herself to send somepony away that far and knowing it would be a death sentence if she could. But the threat had served it's purpose and earned her the fear of God her father wanted her to instill in her subjects.

Her sister had always been interested in science and history and mathematics much like Twilight. If she were still with her today the two of them would no doubt have much to talk about.

The bed she had specially designed for her sister's return, since her bed of simple straw had been first to go up in the flames of war, was soft as a cloud and conformed to the princess's shapely round buttocks, hugging every curve and filling her every crevice. The bed was decked out in moons and stars on the blankets and privacy curtains the ruffled in the breeze from the air-conditioning vent. Running AC through a castle was costly and difficult fro even the most skilled of royal engineers but it was important the room stayed climate controlled to protect her sister's things. She looked at all the model aircraft hanging from the ceiling in a mobile type setup. A few auto carriages cast in plastic she had also taken as much time to assemble carefully and meticulously paint in dark blues, greens, and purples. Her sister was fascinated with the way the machines worked and delighted in adding one piece at a time to the model. The higher the skill level, the better. If it was not accurate then it was not worth putting together. Luna saw two model cars in particular. One a 69 Dodge Charger Daytona, painted a deep indigo blue with a light blue double racing stripe over the hood and the trunk lid and a crescent moon on the wing struts.

She picked up the blue race car with a Number 2 on the side of the door and looked at the rear bumper and the custom Equestria License tag that read
PRN-LUN. She smiled at the detail her sister put into her work and her dedication. Then she set it back down next to the Pearl White 70 Superbird that was it's almost exact twin. It had a single pink racing stripe and a number 1 on the door with a sun on the wing struts. She turned it around and looked at it's tag, it didn't have one. It had come off, either by acident or during one of her sister's bipolar fits. She saw the tag on the shelf and carefully picked it up. PR-TIA1 it read.

Celestia sighed, she had told herself long ago that the bed was the only change she would make to the room because a warm bed she knew would be appreciated after 1000 yrs on the cold surface of the moon. But this she felt she had to fix. She summoned a bottle of modeling paste and with her telekinesis sqeezed a small bead onto the back of the license tag before carefully placing it on the back bumper and meticulously positioning it all centered and level as her sister would no doubt notice it if it were off centered. She set the model in her hoof, carefully back down on the shelf and smiled. The two cars stood side by side, seemingly happy and complete like she hoped she and her sister would one day be.

Nearly everything Celestia owned, clothes, jewelry, and other child hood keepsakes had been destroyed, damaged or lost in the fire but much that her sister owned had been salvaged and she had kept the room with all her toys and books and precious keepsakes in an almost exact replication of her room in the old palace. The bed was the only great change she had made to the room.

Celestia got up and crossed the floor to the terrace. Her magic parted the curtains as she walked past the delicate stargazing instruments. She walked out on the terrace and gazed up at the moon almost full. Tomorrow night it would be at it's full glory. "Dear Selena.. You have haunted my dreams for so many nights now, and they grow stronger as your moon becomes brighter." she gazed mournfully up at the silhouette of a sad unicorn that adorned the moon.

The Mare In The Moon listened silently as her sister prayed to her in desperation "Now you haunt the dreams of my student. I know the day of your return is rapidly approaching. Tomorrow I will face you once more. But why do you involve my beloved student? Do you hate me so much as to attack everything I love? How could you come to hate me so? Was it because I was too busy, or did I slight you in some way? Was it because of the attention I got or the pranks I thought we played on each other in good spirits?"

She broke down on the terrace wall and sobbed into her arms "How could I have ever harmed my dearest and most beloved Luna? How could you have come to hate me so much that you would lock away your own heart and give into madness?! WHY!!? For a thousand years I have asked myself and I havent spoken to our creator sense I lost you!" she looked to the heavens with anger in her tear filled eyes.

"I can only hope.. You can come to forgive me.. For what I did.. And what I must do once more!" she closed her eyes and clenched her teeth in emotional pain and anguish. "but perhaps.." she opened her eyes "you have chosen your true savior." she contemplated "Is Twilight destined to succeed where I had failed? I pray it is so. And perhaps.. You and I can be a family again one day."

With that she walked back into the room, feeling helpless and tired and most of all lonely closing the terrace doors behind her, locking them tight, drawing the curtain and with that the doorway and terrace all was camouflaged by an image of a false castle wall.

Next Ch3. Legend of The Mare In The Moon
so this is the lore behind the birth of Celestia and Luna. due to the age of this document it is up to you decide it's validity and decide whether or not story is the true account of the begining of harmony in Equestria or an overly embellished mythology. Again no transformers are yet mentioned.
